The C# compiler now comes from the same source as the VS C# compiler and so on. They will start adding in diagnostic tools from existing Visual Studio. According to what was said at several of the Connect()2016 speeches all the future work will go into Visual Studio. It makes the transition easy for existing XS people. For now it seems like there really isn't a learning curve (at least when your developer IDE is running on a Mac. The menus, tool bars and functionality are identical between the two IDEs and I can open my solution in either. It seems to me that VS for Mac is just a rebranding of Xamarin's app. I have installed both Xamarin Studio Mac and Visual Studio for Mac Preview. For someone just walking into Xamarin today it might make more since to start with Visual Studio for Mac.

For the extensive base of XS Mac users that means migration.

Something's not said:Īlso, Xamarin Studio is going away - being replaced with Visual Studio for Mac. No actually assembly references were added after installing this package. Is this what I should be using? I am not new to Nuget or Visual Studio. I should mention that my cross-platform project is using Xamarin's Shared implementation (not PCLs'). I tried installing the sqlite-net package via Nuget and interestingly, it installed two c# files (SQLite.cs and SQLiteAsync.cs) into my project.
